Thankful Thursday

There are so many things to be thankful for in this world that I feel this should be a time to reflect on everything God has blessed us with... and something things He hasn't. Because even though we may feel we "need" something, only God knows what is best. Sometimes that involves not answering our prayers in the way we want. So, I'm thankful for those as well.

I'm thankful for my Husband. For the way he takes care of me. All the little things he does that I know about and all those things He does that I don't know about. For the way he takes care of our son. Our little one will grow up to be a wonderful man because of his dad and his love and sacrifice for him. There are so many things I'm thankful for with my husband, but most of all it's for being him, a wonderful man of God, and for loving me just the way I am.

I'm thankful for my dear son. His thirst for adventure always keeps us guessing who we are today. I could be anyone from Wolverine to Mommimus Prime. His smile melts my heart and brings joy to my day. When he says I love you and gives me a hug and kiss, I'm on top of the world. He's such a dear and previous gift from above.

These simple words do not express the depths of my gratitude for being a wife and mother to these 2 very special boys in my life.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

1.      Grab your current read
2.      Open to a random page
3.      Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
4.      BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
5.      Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:

Since I’m still on my current read I was a few weeks ago due to being overly busy, I decided to add a teaser from a previous read.

“Tell me about your son.”
Her face brightened. “Cooper.” She ran her finger around the rim of the water bottle. “He’s my joy. Cooper's seven. A second-grader. He’ll be eight soon. He was diagnosed with leukemia a year ago.”
Leukemia. The word his him hard. Cancer. He managed to maintain his composure. “That’s very hard on you.”
“It’s harder on him.” She lowered her head. “He’s a great kid. You should meet him.”

I'm Still Here

No, I haven’t disappeared off the face of the earth. Though I may feel like it a bit. I’m been extremely busy at work, where I’ve worked overtime and/or worked through lunch. And along with that, we had VBS at church last week. So, every night I was gone. Plus, at the lunch breaks where I wasn’t working, I completed last minute tasks for the VBS carnival. This left no time for my blog, writing or much else.

VBS is now over. Work is still busy, but hoping that it will let up in the next week or two. So, I should be able to get back in to the swing of things.

Look for posts to publish on a regular basis once again.

Writing Corner

I wish there was more to report this week, but there isn’t.

My evenings this past week have been hectic. After I rush home and get dinner on the table, I get my son ready for swim lessons. So far, not thrilled with the lessons. The pool has been shut down twice due to positive Shigella testing and one other time due to weather. I figure tonight will be cancelled again due to weather… unless this rain that’s been going on for hours clears up soon. Not only that, the instructors just don’t seem to know how to teach little kids. There have been moments of hope and moments of frustration.

Then at work, I’m on a special project that is consuming most of my time during the days. Since I have other items that aren’t getting completed during the week, my weekends are used to work from home to complete reports.

Add those up and you get no time for writing. It’s okay though, sometimes you just need a moment away from writing to get a fresh perspective and clear your mind.

Hopefully after VBS next week and the closing of this project over the next few weeks, it will spell more writing time for me. We’ll see.

I love You, O LORD, my strength.

Hometown Promise By: Merrillee Whren

From the Back Cover:

A Chance For A New Life

For six years Lukas Frye has fought to regain control of his reckless life. He comes to Kellerville, Ohio, hoping to settle down and be the man his ailing grandfather can depend on. Lukas thinks he can put down roots in a place unsullied by his past--until he sees Juliane Keller. Juliane knows the secrets that could ruin his chance of being accepted in the place he wants to call home. But she isn't just a reminder of his past; she's a woman with secrets of her own--and a heart capable of the forgiveness and love he needs.

Review:

Hometown Promise is the first in the Kellerville series. Kellerville is an imaginary town just outside of Cincinnati – my Hometown! It was great to read about Cincinnati and feel like this sweet little place was right down the street.

For Lukas, the idea of starting over again in new town after a trouble past is extremely daunting. Add to that - someone from your past lives there. Wow! Just when you want to make a new impression because you’ve changed your life, the worries you won’t be able to do that seem insurmountable.

I think everyone has something in their past they wish to forget about and move on from. Of course, it may not be as bad Lukas’ issue with drinking. So, I really feel for him and hope he can start anew.

At the same time, Juliane, know what his past is like and finds it hard to trust Lukas. Other than knowing his past, she is hiding something that adds to that fear. It’s hard to believe these two souls can find each other through the reminder of the past and pain of the present.

I enjoyed the struggles that both characters dealt with and feel they were approached realistically. When Lukas is faced with a difficult event in his life, he considers drinking again. Instead of being perfect, this is the absolute reaction he would have in the real world. It was nice to see characters with flaws that needed work.

Juliane has to face the reappearance of her “perfect” sister at the same time as figuring out her relationship with Lukas. The insecurity of being the lesser sister is continually on her mind. It’s great to see the two sisters finally talk things through and come to terms with their own relationship.

This leaves a great opening for the next book in the series Hometown Proposal, which follows Juliane’s sister, Elise. I love that this is a series. I get to see what Juliane and Lukas are up to in the new book, too!

If you’ve read Hometown Promise, let me know your thoughts.

Writing Corner

Aah, relaxation! Over the weekend, I finally had time to open up my book and work on it a little bit. I worked on the revisions to my first chapter based on what one of my CPs suggested. I knew something was missing and couldn’t put my finger on it, but my CP did. It’s going to make the first chapter so much better.

Things are still busy for me, so even this little bit of time was nice. This weekend looks pretty good for writing as well. My goal for the weekend is to finish the first chapter revision. Once that’s done, I’m not worrying about the first chapter for a while. I know that revising your first chapter over and over again can be a trap. So, I want to focus on completing this revision and moving on with the second chapter revision.

All the while, I’m still developing my Italian series. I had inspiration for one of the characters earlier in the week. I’m really excited about this series and sharing my family heritage through it.

Do you have a question about God, Jesus, the Bible, or theology?

Have you ever needed help understanding a Bible verse or passage?

Are there any spiritual issues in your life for which you need advice or counsel?

This website is a great resource for Biblical questions and answers. It has helped me on so many topics. It’s also great because you can sign up for a weekly email highlighting one of the questions. Usually the email question focuses on what is going on in the world. I suggest everyone check it out for some great insight.

Seth let that information drift through his fuzzy brain. Despite Elise’s less than enthusiastic reception at her parents’ house, she was here. Could that possibly mean she cared for him, at least a little?

Monday Musings

What is on my mind today? The MTV Movie Awards. I’m sure a lot of people are talking about the awards last night. Who wore what? Did the best kiss take place again on stage? Does a movie other than Twilight stand a chance? Does Kristen Stewart really deserve to win? (Seriously? I’ve seen her act and she wins the Best Actress 3 years in a row?!)

Anyways, it’s an interesting topic for me to write on because I didn’t watch it. Gasp! I know, but I outgrew the show years and years ago. It is for a teen crowd.

First, out of the 2 performers of the evening, I’ve only heard of the Foo Fighters, who started their band when most of last night’s audience was still in diapers. Lupe Fiasco featuring Trey Songz?! No clue. It doesn’t bother me. It’s not necessarily an out of touch thing, I just listen to a different genre and I’ve done so since I was in my early 20s. So, you can’t even say it’s an older person thing. Just preference... okay, and a little out of touch.

Next are the presenters. Some of them are legends (or will be) – Ashton Kutcher, Jim Carrey, Steven Spielberg to name a few. Some of them hope they’ll be around in a couple more years – Selena Gomez and Kristen Stewart. I know, I know, all the teens (and some others) do not like me at the moment. There is a good mix though for everyone and they do a good job at that.

Since I did not see the parodies I can’t comment on those, but normally they do an okay job. I usually do end up seeing these on one of the reruns of the show. Some are good, some not.

As for the categories, well, interesting. Other than the few standbys, it is nice to see a couple that are out of the norm like Best Villain. Why isn’t this category at the Oscars? It would help update it a bit… more than the jokes trying to say they’re younger and more hip. That’s a different topic. I’m not a fan of the categories that contain profanity. Is that really necessary? Don’t think so. And the winners of said categories? Purely based on popularity and not talent.

Last… the Generation Award goes to Reese Witherspoon! Really? At 35 years old she receives this award? Yes she’s been acting for 20 years, but I think that is a bit much. Great actress, I enjoy most of her movies, but she has some more time to put in before receiving such an award. Of course, to a large part of the audience, she has been around their entire lives. So, maybe it is right.

Did you watch the awards? Your thoughts?

Writing Corner

Not much has been going in my little corner of the writing world. With overtime at work and just being plain busy at home, writing has been slow. I’m currently working my way through a revision on my first chapter based on some comments from one of my CPs. She gave me some interesting feedback and it was a great critique. I’m about halfway through the second chapter all in all. I’m very excited about it and when more time opens in a few weeks, I’ll be back to writing a little more.

Other than the current book I’m working on, an idea for a four book series came to me based around an Italian family. My grandmother was from Italy and it holds a special place in my heart. The series will be a tribute to her and my heritage. To give you a little scoop the four books will center around 3 brothers and their younger sister. I’m currently developing each of the characters and a storyline for book 1.

A little part of me that I haven’t written about on my blog yet is that I’m a semi-Extreme Couponer. I’m not to the degree of which you see on TLC, but on a small scale. I’ve developed my own system and amount of couponing I do. It’s what works for my family.

Well, Andrea @ Savings Lifestyle is the one who started it all for me. She has a great website and blog helping you figure out the coupon world. She lists some great deals and does the coupons match-ups for you! We have very similar beliefs in many areas, so she is my favorite coupon resource. Check out her site for some great savings tips.
